LAST SESSION OF THE SEASON, 19th April 2009

"NO CHOPPING DOWN OF TREES" says Ron. "Let's just clear the brash."
As it was the last day of this season we weren't allowed to chop down trees, just burn the brash (twigs and branches and stuff already felled).

It was back breaking work - walk, bend down, drag a tree, throw it on the fire, walk, bend down, drag a tree .. etc.

To add to the pain (or pleasure) it was the first warm day of spring.

FUNGII SPOTTED

Very excited to find some fungii that we beleive are Morels.
Although most Morels are edible we have been advised that even after cooking some are still mildly poisonous.

A pity we don't know more as they are one of the tastiest of fungii and even quite rare.

PIMMS - 19/04/09

After clearing all the brash we lazed around in the sun and felt like royalty.

To celebrate the end of season, your humble author and Jill brought chilled Pimms with apple and cucumber (sorry to the purists for the absence of mint and all the other stuff).

We deserved it, enjoyed it and carried on soaking up the sun.

FUNNY BIT - 19/04/09

Matthew started a game with Ron as to who would put the last piece of wood on the fire. We actually had 2 fires going due to the amount of brash.

Matthew was winning, but we knew that Graham was going to sneak the last piece on when no-one was looking.
Sure enough, as we left Graham ran over and placed a tiny twig on the ashes to claim "Last wood of the season".

Little did Graham know that Matthew, as he passed the second (and last) fire, threw a tiny twig on it. He looked at Jill and just winked - the victory is Matthew's!

LOONY BIT - 19/04/09

Who is the loon who put a cross on the walk?

We have been told it is someone who thinks we should not be chopping down trees and should leave The Walk as it is.

On one hand we can understand that if someone who knows nothing about conservation and bio-diversity would think that open spaces are bad, on the other hand, we know our work is making a positive difference to The Walk by opening up spaces for wild flowers to grow, increasing habitats for birds and butterflies, to redress the un-natural balance between Hawthorne, Ash and Oak.

We are led by a member of the RHS. Ron is one of the few people in the UK who has a licence to spread wild flower seed into areas where it is appropriate and relevant and local.

It may look like vandalism, but it is not.

We are very aware of what we are doing and not only have the permission of the local council, but the guidance of a long standing member of the Royal Horticultual Society.

If you have any queries or worries or complaints, please email me Mike with your concerns.
