COUNCIL MEETING - 10th NOVEMBER 2009
Leire Council had very kindly invited us to give a talk to them (and whoever turned up) after their council meeting on 10th Nov.
Although both Ron and I are used to public speaking, we arranged a meeting at your humble authors (and Jills) home the Sunday before the event. Ron, Jill, Mat and I gathered over food, booze and a laptop to work out what we were going to say.
Ron of course had a prepared speech that only needed a tiny tweak. Someone suggested I showed the web site. I had nothing until we remembered my old projector and Rons screen. Mat was clear in what he wanted - 1) Talk about the bird, butterfly and dragonfly sightings and 2) People to make and report sightings to me when we are not there.
Lots more booze and food later we thought we had a talk. Our biggest concern was that no-one would turn up and we would be doing a one to one to the kind and forward thinking councillors who first gave us permission to do our work down the walk.
On the evening of the talk we met in the pub (of course) beforehand and checked with each other that we weren't nervous. Surprisingly we weren't. We had earned this talk and were brimming with a joy to share our enthusiasm.
We barreled into the meeting and Ron went straight to the front (during the council meeting) and started setting up the screen and display panels. I sat down and felt ever so humble whilst the councillors finished their business.
As we were setting up, more people came in and the room got quite crowded. Hoorah!
Just before Ron started to give his talk, a photographer from the Harborough Mail popped up and started to take some pictures. We were shocked that it was going to get media coverage. It turned out that there was a write up as well! (More later).
We all did our bit and invited questions at the end.
We were amazed at the interest shown. The biggest surprise was not at the questions thrown at us, but the number of people who wanted to give us more information, leaflets, show blueprints and deeds for the walk. Offers of help (Paul and Sam - thank you for following up) and general thanks for what we were doing.
We were genuinely shocked and surprised at the support and kindness shown by everyone. THANK YOU. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.
At the end of the meeting we had expected to maybe get a nod of thanks from the councillors and a contribution to our gloves. What we got was a strong re-inforcement from you, that what we are doing is genuinely appreciated. It was very uplifting and made us smile (big smiles).
This was reinforced by the fact that (allegedly) a Leire Council meeting was rounded off with wine for the first time ever. We were told that never before had anyone splashed out on umpteen bottles of rather nice red and white. Bless whoever decided to toast us. We don't deserve it, but thank you ever so much for the thought (and action).
