Exciting extracts from 'A Brief History of Leire - Part II' by the Leire History Group.
HIGHLIGHTS.
I know I have been a bit remiss in not posting events or pics from some of our visits in 2009 so here is a little catch-up of the highlights ..
Baked Potatoes
Picture the scene, 5 hungry people, 5 potatoes, a cold Sunday and a huge bonfire..
12:00: Mike - "Put the potatoes on the fire now?" The others - "NO, too early"
12:30: Mike - "Put the potatoes on the fire now?" The others - "NO, too early"
13:00: Mike - "Put the potatoes on the fire now?" The others - "NO, too early"
13:30: Mike - "Put the potatoes on the fire now?" The others - "NO, too early"
etc etc ..
15:00: The others - "Put the potatoes on the fire now" Mike - "NO, too late"
16:30: "Are they ready yet?" ALL - "NO - lets go home."
Its the Police!
We are ready to pack up and leave when someone spots a policeman walking towards us.
"Hello, hello, hello" he doesn't say, "Have you seen some youths around here starting a fire?". He is now stood next to our bonfire and realises we are "the youths" that have been reported. Happy days, we are youths again!
The poor chap was on his way home on a particularly cold afternoon and had responded to a "shout" that kids were lighting fires - that's us - that's us! To add insult to injury we had just finished the lovely chestnuts roasted on our open fire and had none for him.
Fox
At the previous session we had spotted a fox near the entrance, up the banking. It seemed very listless and un-afraid.
It just lay there and watched us out of one sleepy looking eye.

Sadly a fortnight later we found its body nearby.
Lumberjack
We now have a fully qualified lumberjack who has the Councils permission to chop down all the big trees, cart them away and sell the logs.
This is a huge help to us as we only have the authors piddling little chain saw which is proving less than reliable at the moment.
Sorry for this reminder, but only people with the Leire Councils express permission can cut down anything at The Jubilee Walk.
It may look like fun to just chop anything down and burn it, but we are led by an RHS member who knows exactly what can and can't be cut down.
It may not look like it, but every tree, bush or flower is identified and noted and we cannot touch a thing until Ron says so.
